If you've ever had sores in the corners of the mouth that ached whenever you opened your mouth to eat, laugh or speak and if you've ever wondered what on earth is causing you this...Then the simple answer is that you are suffering from a problem called angular cheilitis.
Angular cheilitis is also known as perleche, cheiliosis or angular stomatitis. It is the ulceration, the splitting or the cracking of the sides of the lips following a fungal or a bacterial infection.
The cause of angular cheilitis can be any condition that causes saliva to accumulate in the labial commissures (the sides of the lips) and create a moisturized environment where a bacteria or a fungus can live and cause an infection.
This conditions include drooling during sleep, the use of ill fitting dentures or the constant licking of the lips.
People who have a defficiency in vitamin B2, B3, B6 and B12 as well as those who have a deficiency in iron are more vulnerable to this problem.
